18"/dual 12"/1"/dual tweeter (~1984)
It was all about smaller, louder and faster setup times. We did some really good things and made some mistakes with this system. It was originally designed as a permanent install system for the reopening of the "Starwood" club in Hollywood. When the club went belly up we rebuilt it for portable use and took it out on the "Slip it in" Black Flag tour. We were experimenting with a new 12" and horn but neither of them sounded as good as the drivers we used in the other system. The 18" box was an awesome development and the current Rat sub is almost exactly a dual 18" version of this sub. We spent considerable time perfecting not only the tuning but the protection and construction of the sub. We perfected a formula that we use to calculate the cabinet tuning that is a modification of the optimum Theile/Small tuning. This formula is the key to the extremely flat, extended low frequency, high volume sound of our low frequency enclosures. |
