I've just got a studio going in my house recently, about 2-3 months ago, and i've been working as a sound tech for a few mini projects in other studios. Now I know this wont have any help for you unless you are using a studio coz you want to use a PA but, when ever I mic up a kit, I use a 7 piece Samson Q7 mic kit, now this consists of 2 overheads, 3 toms, 1 snare and a kick drum, which is exactly how I set it up, i've never had any problems with cymbals or drums being too loud or quiet but being a drummer myself have always played quite loud. I would advice some Samson drum mics they are good alround mics, they are live and studio mics and come out with an amazing sound. As I said though, 2 overheads, 3 toms, 1 snare and a kick seems to do me live and studio.
