The Brown System
There were some really successful "One Box" systems out there and we thought we would build one to see if it was practical. The "Brown System" set up fast and packed well in the truck. The volume and sound quality was acceptable but it suffered the problems all "One Box" systems suffer, which is that the mid and high drivers should be as close together as possible for maximum coupling and minimum interference. The 18"s in the same box as the other speakers made everything too far apart, we lost volume and we kept needing risers to stack the PA on so that the horns were not at head level. When the PA was on a riser, we lost the low end coupling to the floor. For side fills and utility boxes they were very useful, but for a real PA, we had to dump this design and build something better. We provided Black Flag's "Loose Nut" tour with 12 of these boxes (8 as shown and 4 in a horizontal configuration). It was kind of cool that we could stagger the boxes using wood blocks to make the PA look like the bands logo. |
